Well, the colour scheme is okay, but there is lots of room for improvement as far as the header goes.

As for the sidebar, it’s fine, but again, there’s room for improvement where the section headers are concerned (e.g. Latest Posts, Archive, etc). Maybe try using a solid background or a subtle gradient for these.

Great design! I don’t think it’s too ad heavy, nice placement. It’s a nice color combination which is easy on the eyes. Especially like the Gravatars.
