I know I’m late, this is just to keep track of the main releases as I have always aimed to.

WordPress 2.9 provides the smoothest ride yet because of a number of improvements under the hood and more subtle improvements you’ll begin to appreciate once you’ve been around the block a few times. WordPress 2.9 came about packed with a lot of new features from which the WordPress Dev team has pointed out the following:

Global undo/”trash” feature, which means that if you accidentally delete a post or comment you can bring it back from the grave (i.e., the Trash). This also eliminates those annoying “are you sure” messages we used to have on every delete.

Built-in image editor allows you to crop, edit, rotate, flip, and scale your images to show them who’s boss. This is the first wave of our many planned media-handling improvements.

Batch plugin update and compatibility checking, which means you can update 10 plugins at once, versus having to do multiple clicks for each one, and we’re using the new compatibility data from the plugins directory to give you a better idea of whether your plugins are compatible with new releases of WordPress. This should take the fear and hassle out of upgrading.

Easier video embeds that allow you to just paste a URL on its own line and have it magically turn it into the proper embed code, with Oembed support for YouTube, Daily Motion, Blip.tv, Flickr, Hulu, Viddler, Qik, Revision3, Scribd, Google Video, Photobucket, PollDaddy, and WordPress.tv (and more in the next release).

Two short remidners dear WordPress users: the first is a small update to one of the libraries WordPress uses and the secod is a call for help by WordPress for cool icon designers. Read on:

A vulnerability in the Snoopy library was announced today. WordPress uses Snoopy to fetch the feeds shown in the Dashboard. Although this seems to be a low risk vulnerability for WordPress users, we wanted to get an update out immediately. 2.6.3 is available for download right now. If you don’t want to download the whole release to get the security fix, you can download the following two files and copy them over your 2.6.2 installation.

wp-includes/class-snoopy.php

wp-includes/version.php

- – -

The icons: We’ll need icons for each of the main navigation sections, plus a matching pair of list/excerpt view icons for the table screens like Edit Posts. That’s a total of 13, and for the navigation icons we’ll also need a larger size for use in the screen headers. Some of the sections have natural iconography, while others may be more challenging. The sections are: Dashboard, Posts, Media, Links, Pages, Comments, Appearance, Settings, Users, Plugins, Tools.

Interested? Send us an email and tell us why you want to design the icons, and include a link to your portfolio. How we wind up choosing an icon designer will depend on how many people respond, but we’ll keep you posted on the process. For now, send in portfolio links by Saturday night, October 25, 2008. We’ll review them over the weekend and get in touch with people on Monday. Hopefully we can be designing by early next week.

This is it. First update your WordPress installation and second, if you are a great icon designers, than go and tell the WP world that you really are.

Good news for all, WordPress 2.6 is out of the forge, well baked and with a lot of new ingredients. They say at WordPress.org Dev Blog:

Version 2.6 “Tyner,” named for jazz pianist McCoy Tyner, contains a number of new features that make WordPress a more powerful CMS: (the way I like it ) you can now track changes to every post and page and easily post from wherever you are on the web, plus there are dozens of incremental improvements to the features introduced in version 2.5.

Let us get immediately to new feature.

1. Post Revisions: WordPress 2.6 now saves your previous posts that you revise, i.e. at any time in the future you can restore, if you want, a previous copy of the post or page. You can even compare between the.

2. Press This: Press this is great now. Very flexible and neat.

3. Image Caption: Image caption is great. That is what I have missed from not using NextGen Gallery. Now that WordPress 2.6 has that I am very happy with that.

4. Theme Preview: Theme Prwview is nicer, you can now have real previews of themes not having first to activate them.

5. Gears: When I heard that Automattic implemented Gears in WordPress.com blogs, I was hoping that would do that even in self-hosted blogs and they did. Blogs now can run a lot faster. Thanks!

6. WordCount: WordPress now counts the number of words you write in the editor. That is great!

7. Media Drag & Drop: Now you can change the positions of the files in the media by just drag & drop.

8. Plugin Activation: Now you can active all plugins and exclude the ones you do not like to.

9. Gravatars: Now you can choose between a lot of default avatars for your commenters that do not use gravatar service.

For more and more details read here at WordPress.org Dev Blog.

Do not forget to download WordPress 2.6 here.
